Star Wars Outlaws is officially set to launch on August 30th but those who purchase the Gold Edition will gain early access and can start playing as soon as August 27th. With the game's release just days (or hours) away, reviews have started to roll in.
While anticipation is high, there's also seemed to be a bit of skepticism surrounding Star Wars Outlaws, a new open-world game game developer Ubisoft. The publisher has done a great job teasing the excitement of being a smugger in a galaxy far, far away, but early previews tempered some of this excitement with some janky combat footage. So what are critics saying?
With about 100 critic reviews so far — spread across PS5, Xbox, and PC — Star Wars Outlaws is sitting in the high 80s. There doesn't seem to be much of a difference between the platforms, although the game is a point higher on Xbox and PC (78) versus PS5 (77). 79% of the reviews lean towards "positive" while 19% are mixed.
IGN gave Star Wars Outalws a 7/10, calling it a "fun intergalactic heist adventure with great exploration." However, they stated that "it's hindered by simple stealth, repetitive combat, and a few too many bugs at launch."
PC Gamer scored it a 73/100, saying it "succeeds at the little things, but not much else." Like IGN, the reviews criticized the game's repetitive mechanics, but praised the roleplaying aspects as "some of the best fun I've had with anything Star Wars."
Eurogamer was one of the most critical reviews, scoring it just a 40/100. "Massive bravely peels away the many layers of Ubisoft open world-isms in Star Wars Outlaws. It's a fatal error," the site wrote.
Star Wars Outlaws is undoubtedly one of this year's biggest games, so it's nice to see that it's getting a generally positive reception. Whether this will turn into financial success remains to be seen though. Despite its flaws, it does sound like Star Wars Outlaws is still generally a fun playthrough.
