Assassin's Creed is a series developed by Ubisoft that originated on the Xbox 360 back in 2007. The game's main selling point, as well as its main protagonist, has always been the world itself. From the Holy Land to Firenze, and even Egypt,
Assassin's Creed games have always mesmerised players with its lively worlds set in specific periods in time.
Games in the series have always featured at least one time period and earlier titles featured a present time story, as well as the ancestor arc but, as technology moves forward, future
Assassin's Creed titles could feature multiple time periods.
An interview with Lionel Raynaud, Ubisoft Executive Vice President of Creative for Ubisoft Canada, on the official
Ubisoft news site, shed some light about the future of the
Assassin's Creed series. One of the questions focused on the open world featured in
Assassin's Creed titles and what was it that made them want to dive into open worlds in general. Raynaud said that since the series' inception, they have always been encouraged by the technology available when they begin development. In fact, that's what made them want to focus on parkour in an open world since the technology allowed them to.
Regarding the new technologies, Raynaud also believes that next entries in the Assassin's Creed series will likely feature multiple time periods as he said that they "
will have technology that will break the [current] limits of memory, for instance, because of new technologies that are arriving. We would be able to – in the same world – have several historical periods, for instance, in Assassin's Creed". What's interesting is that it looks like they have already given this a lot of thought as he then mentions that they could even use the Animus to travel from one time period to the other, or even have areas of the world that could be linked by travel systems.
It definitely sounds like having multiple time periods in
Assassin's Creed games is not only probable, but also inevitable. It could really add a lot of replay value to the games—which are already pretty generous regarding in-game content—as well as expanding on the story by not only focusing on one ancestor, but several that are linked together. After all, that has been the premise of the games since the first
Assassin's Creed came out.
