Since the first Assassin's Creed game release back in 2007, the series has sold over 110 million copies worldwide, becoming Ubisoft's best-selling franchise and one of the highest selling video game franchises of all time. 10 big-budget games, one underwhelming Hollywood adaptation, 8 smaller project for mobile devices, the announcement of a Netlix series, three short films, eleven comics, nine novels and a board game later, even the original game's producer doesn't understand its success.
Jade Raymond, the producer of Assassin's Creed and founder of Electronic Arts' Motive Studios and Ubisoft Toronto had a chance to express her opinion on the series past and future during a session at Develop:Brighton this week. "I've gotta be honest, I'm still surprised about how successful Assassin's Creed is and how it took on a life of its own," Raymond explained.
"When we started working on it, we did have a plan to make three games. We wanted to, we were super excited. And we also felt like since we were getting this great opportunity to create a new franchise from scratch, and a brand from scratch, we really wanted to create a sort of franchise meta-infrastructure or story engine if you will, so that the franchise could live on," the producer concluded.
The initial plan to make three games ultimately turned into one of the most-successful series in modern culture. Back in 2009, Sébastien Puel from Ubisoft said that "we could do 35 of these [Assassin's Creed games]", while Laurent Detoc from Ubisoft later said "we hope to reach Assassin's Creed 10". It looks like Assassin's Creed will continue to dominate the media in the years to come.
