This (eight) generation of consoles has given us many wonderful open-world RPG titles with The Witcher 3: WIld Hunt as the king of the hill. It looks like Ubisoft Quebec managed to do impossible, and after impressive Origins helped the brand to reach new heights. Apparently, Assassin's Creed: Odyssey rivals The Witcher 3's story, gameplay, scope, setting and graphic design like an equal. GOTY?

Well, there are some noticeable problems, such as a massive amount of level grinding through less-than-stellar side quests and irritating bugs. Considering that Odyssey currently sits at a fantastic 88% on Metactiric, these problems are not ruining the overall stellar experience with breathtaking vistas, engaging combat and story, colorful and unique setting and some smart RPG gameplay mechanics.

According to the first reviews, Odyssey is simply a huge, ambitious game that's building on the solid foundations of Origins and surpasses it in almost every way. With an emphasis on player choice, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has leapt to new heights, truly becoming a full open-world RPG and a fresh opener in the 11-year old series. Be sure to check out the first critics' verdicts down below:

GamesRadar+ - "In the end this journey is all about choice. The people you decide to let live, the romances you have, the sexuality lines you blur, the questlines you follow, the people you help and hinder and the RPG picks you make. It's an utterly beautifully crafted world and story, with cutscenes for literally days. After 70 hours I've only just finished the main storyline and I still have plenty to see in Odyssey's Greece, and it's a joy to keep on exploring. No-one's made an open-world RPG with this much depth and brilliance since The Witcher 3. This really is the ultimate Creed."

We Got This Covered  - "Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, at its core, is an epic historical RPG that uses familiar assets, lore, and mechanics from the Assassin’s Creed universe. Of course, as the story progresses, more is revealed, and the merging of historical RPG and core Assassin’s Creed game comes to light — I won’t spoil any of that here, but believe me, it’s worth the wait. With 40-50 hours of gameplay for the main story and nine different endings based on the choices made throughout your personal odyssey, this is a game that can easily be played over and over for 400 hours or more, if you want to see everything the game has to offer. That is a staggering number for any franchise, and it really goes to show how epic this game is."

Playstation Universe - "In the end, the shift to a more ambitious RPG style of play makes complete sense. After all, history is much, much more than just a parkour playground – it’s an interconnected amalgam of stories, characters, conflicts and daily life that all combine to author key events in the chronicles of humanity."

USgamer - "A lot of folks will wonder: is Assassin's Creed Odyssey better than Assassin's Creed Origins? On the whole, Odyssey offers a full RPG experience with cool choices, a wide variety of places to explore, and the return of ship combat to the series. Odyssey is a much bigger game; it took me around 70 hours to complete the main campaign, though you could probably get that down to around 40 if you just blaze through. And the foundation of Odyssey is drawn from Origins, which was an excellent game. Where it falters is in some of the systems it adds to the formula, like Conquest Battles or recruitment; these aren't bad features overall, but they need a little rethinking and polishing to stand up to the rest of the game. I think at the end of it all, I enjoyed Odyssey more, though. Odyssey and Origins aren't the Assassin's Creeds of old, but they're both a compelling new foundation for the franchise and Odyssey is clearly a step in the right direction. If you're ready for another huge journey, Ubisoft has one ready for you."
