DC Studios CEO James Gunn Says There's "No Truth" To THE BATMAN Game Rumors

After reports of a new video game set in the universe of Matt Reeves' The Batman circulated earlier this week, DC Studios CEO James Gunn has responded to the legitimacy of the rumor.

Earlier this week, it was reported that a new video game set within the universe of Matt Reeves' The Batman was in development. The rumor stemmed from Puck, though there were no additional details, therefore we cautioned to take it with a grain of salt.

As it turns out, no such game is currently in development. DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn was asked straight-up by a fan on Threads if the rumor of the game was true to which he responded: "Sadly there is no truth to this whatsoever."

He also added, on a somewhat unrelated note, that "There is also no truth to Tubthumping by Chumbawamba being played on the set of Superman (this is a real rumor on Reddit someone just sent me!)" You know, just in case you were wondering.

Released in 2022, The Batman was a huge hit for Warner Bros., scoring 85% on Rotten Tomatoes and raking in over $770 million at the worldwide box office. The film was directed by Matt Reeves and served as a reboot of the Batman film franchise, starring Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman.

Given the film's success, it wouldn't have been a total shocker to see a video game based on the movie. Batman video games have typically done well although most of the success has been attributed to Rocksteady Studios' Batman Arkham series.

The Batman: Arkham franchise began in 2009 and has seen four mainline installments released since then, including multiple spin-offs. The last mainline game was 2015's Batman: Arkham Knight, although 2024's Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was technically set in the same Arkhamverse and served as a follow-up to Arkham Knight. Unfortunately, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League received mixed reviews and criticism for its repetitive gameplay and live service elements. It was failed to meet the sales expectations of Warner Bros. Games.

There's currently a new Batman: Arkham Shadow game in development, although it's a VR game exclusive to the Meta Quest 3. It serves as a direct sequel to Batman: Arkham Origins and stars Roger Craig Smith as Batman.

We don't know what Rocksteady Studios is up to right now following Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, but it's worth mentioning that they are reportedly developing a new game. We don't know what it will be, but at least now we can rule out The Batman as a potential option.
