The 2026-27 NFL season is almost upon us. While Madden NFL 27 has been out for about a month now, and many of you have already started your franchises, the in-game rosters have technically not been 100% finalized. That's because the 53-man rosters aren't finalized until the end of preseason, which was on August 29th. That was a little over a week ago, but we're talking about hundreds of rosters moves. It takes a while for EA to get that into the game.
But with kickoff just two days away, you may be wondering when the main roster update will be released. EA has not announced when the 53-man roster update will go live for Madden 27, but we do have years of precedent to give us a good idea.
Typically, the roster update lands the same day as the first game of the season. In year's past, that's been on a Thursday. However, this year's season begins with a Wednesday night showdown between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks, a rematch of Super Bowl LX. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:20 p.m. ET on Wednesday, September 9. So there's a good chance the update will be out by then.
If not, then we're most likely looking at a roster update on Thursday, September 10, hours before the 49ers play the Rams in Australia.
Now it's worth pointing out that there have been multiple updates in Madden 27 already, including a title update in late August. But that was focused mostly on gameplay tuning and game mode updates. Title updates are usually different from roster updates.
For what it's worth, EA Sports producer Dustin Smith, known by the community as "Equipment Guru," has also confirmed that a roster update is expected this week. He was asked by a fan on September 4th if we'll be getting a roster update by Wednesday, to which he simply replied: "Yes."
For those of you who have already begun your franchises, you'll unfortunately need to restart in order to have the most accurate, up-to-date rosters. For those who have been waiting, it's only two or three more days.
In addition to this first update, EA typically releases weekly roster updates that adjust player ratings throughout the season. EA will adjust the ratings of players based on how they perform in real life, so expect some shuffling. Again, this won't impact you if you've already begun your franchise, though.
