Earlier in August of this year, we found out that
Capcom was calling for playtesters to try out a brand-new title in the critically acclaimed Resident Evil series; leading fans to believe the developer could probably working on a
Resident Evil 3 remake, or even a
Resident Evil 8.
Last week Capcom finally unveiled
Project Resistance, a 4 vs 1 multiplayer game based set in the
Resident Evil universe, and fans were cautiously optimistic, as it seemed that this new title could be a proper successor to
Resident Evil Outbreak; then the gameplay trailer was released.
When the developer finally released the gameplay trailer for
Project Resistance, fans were not happy at all; complaining that the game deviates way too much of the classic survival-horror experience the
Resident Evil series was known for when the first games were released.
Capcom Producer Matt Walker has taken to Twitter to support
Project Resitance, calling it "
a great survival-horror experiene, if non-traditional" while also reminding players that they, as a company, need to branch out and try different things with the series.
"
Been seeing a lot of people who are not pleased with the idea that we’re making Project Resistance. It’s totally valid that people want more of that quality core experience offered in RE2 and RE7," explained Walker on a lenghty Twitter thread.
"
My take – we as a company need to continue to branch out and try to offer up new gameplay in addition to refining the experiences people expect from us. If we just continue to offer up the same thing over and over again, people will gradually lose interest with what we’re making."
Walker reassures players that while
Project Resistance does do a few things differently, it doesn't really deviate too much from the core spirit of the
Resident Evil series.
"
Project Resistance offers up a really interesting way to do that. The most important part? That it’s a great survival horror experience, if non-traditional. I think we confuse things when we make things related to IP that don’t actually stay true to the core spirit of the IP, but this project happily doesn’t fall into that trap."
While we have only seen the gameplay shown in the teaser released earlier this week, the problem doesn't seem to be the fact that it is a multiplayer game, but the fact that it could've been a proper Resident Evil Outbreak sequel; at least that's what most fans seem to agree on.
Project Resistance may end up becoming a fan-favorite like Resident Evil Outbreak did back in the day, but we'll just have to wait and see how things turn up when the game finally releases; until then, Capcom deserves the benefit of the doubt.
Will you work with your allies as a Survivor, or will you crush their attempt to escape as the vicious Mastermind? The choice is yours in this 4 vs 1 asymmetrical co-op experience.
Project Resistance still doesn't have an official release date.
