In the 24 years since the founding of Insomniac Games, the company has created acclaimed platformers such as the Spyro Trilogy and the Ratchet and Clank franchise. They also dabbled in the First Person Shooter genre when they made the Resistance series. Sunset Overdrive was an Xbox exclusive third person action adventure that succeeded in demonstrating that the company can make games as good as Sucker Punch's Infamous: Second Son.

In an interview with Game Informer, CEO Ted Price reveals that it was actually Sony who approached the company to develop a Spider-Man game. Apparently, Marvel liked the company's work and was eager to work with them.

Ted points out some similarities between the character and Insomniac Games. The developer identifies with Spidey because they are both underdogs. Also, their similar sense of humor makes the studio a perfect fit for one of Marvel's funniest characters. Spider-Man is the biggest game Insomniac has ever worked on.

Sony Interactive Entertainment, Insomniac Games, and Marvel have teamed up to create a brand-new and authentic Spider-Man adventure. This isn’t the Spider-Man you’ve met or ever seen before. This is an experienced Peter Parker who’s more masterful at fighting big crime in New York City. At the same time, he’s struggling to balance his chaotic personal life and career while the fate of millions of New Yorkers rest upon his shoulders.

Spider-Man will be released on September 7th exclusively on the Playstation 4.
