Star Wars: Squadrons was finally, and officially announced last week by Electronic Arts and Motive; revealing a 5v5 multiplayer game that will see players flying some of the galaxy's most iconic starfighters from the universe of Star Wars, while also offering a solid single player campaign.

Players have learnt how to be cautiously optimistic about Star Wars games published by Electronic Arts, especially after the initial reception both entries in the new Star Wars battlefront series had. Of course, things have changed since the new Battlefront games released, and the critically acclaimed Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is solid proof of it.

The developers at Respawn Entertainment made it very clear that Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was their vision, and this really resonated with fans of the Star Wars series. Not only that, but the developers delivered on their promise, and made the game that they wanted to make, and told the story that they wanted to tell.

It seems that Electronic Arts has been taking notes and listening to fans, as it has recently been revealed that Star Wars: Squadrons is also a passion project in the same way Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is — which should make fans of Star Wars quite happy.

During a recent interview with Games Industry.biz, Electronic Arts Chief Studios Officer Laura Miele revealed that Star Wars: Squadrons isn't a byproduct of market research, but a true passion project by the team of developers at Motive Studios; a project that wsn't even on EA's plans at all.

According to Miele, "Star Wars Squadrons is a strong example of following the passion of our development teams. This game didn't come from market research — it wasn't on our roadmap, but the Motive team was truly inspired about the concept. And it seems fans agree, as we've seen fantastic engagement and anticipation since we released the trailer."

Both the reveal and gameply trailer for Star Wars: Squadrons are proof that this is Motive Studios' vision. During the EA Play presentation, the game's Creative Director Ian Frazier made it very clear how much of a fan of Star Wars he is, and that the developers currently working on Star Wars: Squadrons are also hardcore fans, and it definitely shows.

Buckle up, take full control of starfighters such as the X-wing and TIE fighter, and feel the adrenaline of strategic first-person 5v5 multiplayer dogfights alongside your squadron. In a fateful campaign set near the conclusion of the Galactic Civil War, learn what it means to be a pilot in a thrilling STAR WARS™ single-player story. The New Republic fights for freedom. The Empire demands order. We need you to join the galaxy’s finest.

Star Wars: Squadrons will release for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on the 2nd of October.
