NPD Group Analyst Mat Piscatella was asked about the top-selling head to head fighting video games per platform on his personal Twitter account, and he revealed that
Mortal Kombat X and
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate are leading on the respective platforms they released on.
According to Piscatella's list,
Mortal Kombat X is the top-selling fighting game on both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. What's even more interesting is that on Microsoft and Sony's consoles the top 3 is comprised of titles developed by NetherRealm Studios; these being
Mortal Kombat X,
Injustice 2, and
Mortal Kombat 11.
The Nintendo Switch is a different story, since
Mortal Kombat X did not release for Nintendo's handheld hybrid console — although
Mortal Kombat 11 did make the Top 5; comfortably sitting in the 4th position.
Like it was to be expected, the top-selling fighting game on the Nintendo Switch is none other than
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, followed by
Pokkén Tournament DX and
ARMS; all three developed by Nintendo.
It is also worth mentioning that for all three of the Nintendo-developed fighting titles, only physical copies were considered; meaning that all of the other titles on the list of Nintendo Switch fighting games didn't stand a chance any way.
Whatever the case, the big winner here is NetherRealm Studios, with at least one game making the Top 5 on each of the platforms considered for this head to head top-selling fighting games per platform.
