One Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows is introducing a rather interesting mechanic, since players will be playing as their in-game avatar and fight some powerful demons while they wait for more qualified heroes to arrive; in many cases, they will be waiting for Saitama.
In a recent interview with the official PlayStation Blog,
One Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows Producer Yahata Yasuhiro has revealed some very interesting details about this unique new gameplay mechanic.
According to Yasuhiro, in early stages of development they did consider having players play as Saitama from the get-go, but it was tricky since Saitama can defeat any opponent with just the one punch — making the game way too easy — which is why they decided to have players create an avatar.
"
When development started, we considered making Saitama the protagonist," Yasuhiro revealed. "
However, he can defeat anyone with one punch, so instead we went for a customisable character who the player uses to dive in to the One Punch Man world."
Yasuhiro also reveals that they had to find a way to make Saitama playable, and that's how they came up with the game's "Hero Arrival" system.
"
The Hero Arrival system, where playable characters arrive late, came from trying to figure out how to create a fighting game where using Saitama would guarantee victory. Right from the start, we also planned to introduce some sort of a cost system into character selection," explained Yasuhiro.
One Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows is adapting the anime, but it is also doing so in a way that it's interesting for fans who have already watched both seasons of the popular anime — which is why the developers focused on telling the same story but in a way that is still interesting for those who are familiar with it.
"
We started the project with the goal of adapting the first season of the anime, so we were less concerned with the story’s progression and more concerned with finding ways to make the story interesting for fans who knew it. Because the player character fights monsters before Saitama defeats them, I think the experience differs from watching the anime."
ONE PUNCH MAN: A HERO NOBODY KNOWS is an action fighting game set in a universe where threats are daily occurrences and heroes the sole hope against annihilation. Saitama the main protagonist, is a hero that can obliterate even the strongest foes with a single punch, a situation that bother him to no end.
One Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows is expected to release for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on the 28th of February.
