With the massive success of
Street Fighter II: The World Warrior in 1991, fans of Capcom's best-selling fighting series were highly anticipating
Street Fighter III to come out soon only to be slightly disappointed because next titles were either
Street Fighter Alpha games, or one of the many revisions of
Street Fighter II.
It wasn't until 1997 that fans finally got the Street Fighter II sequel they had been clamouring all those years with
Street Fighter III: New Generation—and they were, once again, slightly disappointed. It took some time for fans of the series to embrace Street Fighter III, especially because the game only featured a few of the original characters, and it even introduced a new main character that was replacing Ryu—which didn't bode well with the fans.
Much like
Street Fighter II before it,
Street Fighter III saw two revisions with "
2nd Impact" and "
3rd Strike" that added Arcade, Versus, and Training, and Option mode—that were missing from the original version—as well as Parry Attack mode, and new characters. The Parry is probably what sets Street Fighter III apart from the other games in the series, adding a whole new layer that recquired expert timing to block attacks without taking damage.
It was for all the reasons above that the game eventually warmed up to the game and the new fighters it introduced but these days it is widely accepted that "
3rd Strike" is not only the definitive version of
Street Fighter III, but also the one with the most complex gameplay mechanics—which definitely makes it a fan-favourite in the competitive community.
