Ever since the early 90s, fans of the video game fighting genre have been wanting to see Capcom's Street Fighter series crossing over with NetherReal Studios' Mortal Kombat series; as of yet, however, it still hasn't happened.

This isn't to say that these series haven't had crossovers of their own — with Capcom's Street Fighter having a bunch of crossover entries with Marvel Comics, and NetherRealm Studios' Mortal Kombat series doing their own thing with DC Comics and their Injustice series.

In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Street Fighter Producer Yoshinori Ono has revealed that there have been talks about a potential crossover with Mortal Kombat at Capcom, but the ideas — at least, for the time being — have been rejected by the developer.

When Ono is asked if it was him who denied the idea that Mortl Kombat Co-creator Ed Boon had about having a Street Fighter character show up in Mortal Kombat, he simply said that there was such a proposal, but it wasn't him who rejected Boon's idea.

"It's true that a proposal for a Street Fighter character in Mortal Kombat was rejected by Capcom. But it wasn't me personally! There were many people at the company that felt that it wasn't a good fit for our characters. I actually met Ed at the Brazil game show and spoke to him personally about it. So it's true - but I didn't make the decision!"

According to Ono, however, it's more of an issue that has to do with both series being too different from each other, although he also reveals that at Capcom they don't rule anything out, so there may still be a chance for a crossover with the Mortal Kombat series happening at some point in the future.

"We don't necessarily rule anything out. We've had our share of crossovers over the years - Marvel vs. Capcom, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. From Ed Boon's side they had Injustice that had various universes colliding. It didn't work out this time, but Capcom is interested in doing that kind of thing. If we can get something we feel good about, we could move quite quickly to make that happen."

A Mortal Kombat Vs. Street Fighter game has every fans dream video game. While it seems that a crossover like that may not happen anytime soon, it is at least nice to know that Capcom are still open to the idea. We already know that Ed Boon wants it to happen so we're half way there; right now, however, the ball's on Capcom's court.
