With its biggest rival, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, and other games dropping single-player campaigns altogether, many fans were surprised to learn that Battlefield V won't be ditching its War Stories mode.

Now, in an interview with PC Games N, design director Daniel Berlin provided some insight into why DICE chose to once again include a story campaign with the latest entry in the Battlefield franchise.

"We had the discussion, but it comes down to a couple of things. One, I still think there are people who like single-player campaigns," Berlin explained. "And two, we really like War Stories. Making them drives passion from the team. That’s good for the product as a whole. It gives the team something that improves the whole of the game."

The developer continued this discussion by further expanding on how the passion put into the single-player component of a game can carry over into the multiplayer aspect.

"If we decide to have an airplane game, we have to think about what emotions we want the player to have, what music should be in there, what type of voices. And by making those decisions for the single-player narrative, that bleeds into the multiplayer and the rest of the game. It gives us so much."

While it's not surprising to hear a developer defend the creative choices behind their game, it's still interesting to hear Berlin explain DICE's decision to move forward with Battlefield V's War Stories mode—especially when so many developers claim dropping a single-player campaign allows them to focus on delivering a better multiplayer experience.

Battlefield V will be available tomorrow for customers who pre-ordered the Deluxe Edition. Everyone else, however, will have to wait until the title's official launch on November 20.
