Following mass layoffs at Bungie in recent weeks, there's been some uncertainty surrounding the future of Destiny. Despite the success of the game's most recent expansion, The Final Shape, Bungie was forced to eliminate 220 roles — or roughly 17% of the company's workforce — due to rapid expansion in 2023 and a sharp downturn in the games industry.
Although Bungie maintained a commitment to Destiny as well as its new PvP extraction shooter, Marathon, various reports were claiming that the layoffs would impact the future of Destiny, and even the potential for a future game set in the sci-fi universe.
Bloomberg's Jason Schreier and Giant Bomb's Jeff Grubb both reported that Bungie's next Destiny game, referred to as codename Payback, was canceled; although, it was a bit unclear if its cancelation came before or after the layoffs. Either way, the future of Destiny looked murky, which forced Bungie to respond.
In a recent post on X/Twitter, Bungie acknowledged that the layoffs have created "uncertainty" surrounding the future of Destiny. Despite this, the developer assured fans that they "remain committed to Destiny," adding that they have plans to deliver regular updates to the game.
Bungie promised to share more about the future of Destiny and "plans for our next multi-year journey soon." Unfortunately, they did not offer any timeline for when we can expect more news.
Destiny's first major storyline, The Light and Darkness Saga, began with the launch of the original Destiny game in 2014. It concluded 10 years later with the most recent expansion, The Final Shape, this past June. While many found the expansion to be a fantastic way to cap off the decade-long narrative, no one was quite sure where the game's story would go from here.
Between these layoffs and the cancelation of Payback, there's even more uncertainty and confusion. Given the overall success of Destiny as a whole, it never really felt as though Bungie would abandon the franchise completely. While Bungie is promising a future multi-year journey, there's speculation that expansions could be fewer and farther between, while also being more limited in general scope and size.
Would you like to see Destiny's story continue through Destiny 2 or would you prefer a full-fledged sequel in Destiny 3?
