Ahead of tomorrow's premiere of Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix, Netflix has dropped three exciting new posters for the project. And no, your eyes are not playing tricks on you, the series will indeed introduce an Assassin's Creed-inspired bullfrog and Rayman as well.
If you've played 2013's Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, you're likely aware that we're in for a pretty big departure from the source material. Jade and Pey'J from Beyond Good and Evil are also set to play supporting roles in the series.
In a recent interview with IGN, executive producer Adi Shankar revealed that it wasn't his animated Castlevania series that led to Blood Dragon, but Shankar's Bootleg Universe work, which is a series of unauthorized fan films that drastically reimagines some fan-favorite IPs.
"[Ubisoft] kept saying, ‘No, this is Bootleg Universe.’ It was the viral short films that created this opportunity," said Shankar.
He went on to explain that Laser Hawk is so outlandish that he traveled with a Ubisoft exec when he was pitching the series to various outlets, who would reaffirm that Shankar had permission to execute some of the off-the-wall concepts he was proposing.
"One of the owners of Ubisoft actually came with me to every network we talked to about the show, to literally sit in the room and say, ‘Yes, he can do all of this. Yes, we are going to allow that,’ ” he told IGN.
“Because you get in the room with the head of a network and they're like, ‘Okay, dude. You're kind of like this renegade guy. You do weird s*#t sometimes. You don't always play by the rules. I'm sure they're going to let you get away with this, uh-huh. I'm sure.’ "
In Blood Dragon, Nathaniel Curtis voices Dolph Laserhawk, the Assasin's Creed inspired Bullfrog is portrayed by Balak, Shankar voices the Power Rangers-inspired Red, Boris Hiestand voices Alex Taylor (from The Crew), and Mark Ebulue voices Marcus Holloway from Watch Dogs 2 fame.
Additionally, David Menkin portrays Rayman, while Jade and Pey'j from Beyond Good and Evil fame are voiced by Courtney Mae-Briggs and Glenn Wrage, respectively.
In a technocracy ruled by propaganda and corruption, super-soldier Dolph Laserhawk leads a team of rebel outcasts on risky undercover missions to survive.
Created by Adi Shankar, the series is based on the 2013 video game Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon by Ubisoft.
Paris-based animation studio Bobbypills is spearheading production.
