The Digital Foundry Crew Tries To Explain Why FAR CRY 2's Small Details Are Missing In FAR CRY 5

When Far Cry 2 was released back in 2008, the world still lived in the dark era of DirectX 9 with no tessellation and photogrammetry. Then, Far Cry 2 came out and killed systems and graphic cards with its advanced simulations, hi-res textures, and trees and foliage moving based upon wind and the forces around them. For the series, it was another huge step forward. For everybody else, it was a crisis.

Yes, Crysis. Crytek's (the studio also responsible for the first Far Cry game) revolutionary game has made even a bigger leap of faith that Far Cry 2 and till this day remains a benchmark for many developers. But why the biggest step in games' graphics was made in 2008? Why Far Cry 5, a game released a dacede later, lacks some details we've seen in both, Crysis and Far Cry 2? Digital Foundry tries to provide an answer.

Their latest video focuses on Far Cry 2 and released a week ago Far Cry 5. There are obvious differences between the construction of the games, where Far Cry 2 is a series of bigger and smaller corridors as Far Cry 5 truly delivers on a promise of an open-world game.

The conclusion is simple: "Far Cry 2 is unwieldy, frustrating, yet ambitious. Learning from the successes of prior series entries, Far Cry 5 is perhaps less complicated, but it's clearly more polished and more advanced in terms of the quality of its visuals. Most importantly, however, the technology is geared more toward delivering fun." Considering the scope of Far Cry 5, this answer makes sense.
