Blizzard might have to soon step in and address the elephant in the room before the Overwatch community cannibalizes itself. The issue of top Overwatch players having several backup accounts has been a long-debated issues but it's come to a head in recent days after professional Overwatch player Aimbotcalvin bragged during his Twitch stream that he had multiple slots in the game's Top 20 Ranking List. Commenters in his stream that complained were apparently rebuffed by Aimbotcalvin who stated that if they wanted to unseat his backup accounts then "Earn it."
In Overwatch, alternate or backup accounts are called "Smurfs". Some gamers are convinced that Overwatch's Top 500 Ranking List is actually comprised of about maybe 1/4 or 1/5 of that actual number, with the remaining slots occupied by Smurf accounts.
Aimbotcalvin plays for the professional Overwatch eSports team, TeamSoloMid. The argument has come down on two-sides- those who say backup accounts are an unfair practice and keep casual gamers from rising up the ranks. Others argue that if you want to get ranked then simply, "Get good." That's a sentiment echoed by professional Overwatch gamer McGravy, team Captain of Envision.
It will be interesting to see if Blizzard decides to address the issue or if further issues and complications will need to arise for the company to take action. Having multiple accounts technically isn't illegal, Blizzard just requires a new purchase of the game in order to setup a new account. While there's no monetary reward from having a high or top rank in Overwatch, Blizzard does dole out limited-edition items and perks to its best players.
