Fans asked Activision, the series' publisher to finally abandon the futuristic direction started in Advanced Warfare (well, 2013's Ghosts also included some tech from the future, but it was still pretty "grounded") and lasted for two years including Black Ops III and Infinite Warfare. This trend is (finally) over and the series came back to World War II, but things could've been very different for this year's Call of Duty.
In an interview with Newsweek, Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg has said that the original Sledgehammer's idea was different than what the publisher's desired. “Sledgehammer wanted to make Advanced Warfare 2," but Activision asked the developer to reintroduce the player to the biggest conflict in mankind's history.
"We knew they would become historians, that they would tackle it with authenticity, give it tremendous care, and we also knew they would capture the unspeakable scale of World War II," the CEO added. That strategy definitely paid off, as the game is not only appreciated by the critics, but also vastly popular on the market, beating Infinite Warfare's 3-day score two times.
