During Vanity Fair's New Establishment Summit this weekend, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick spoke about the rising number of eSports viewers and participants and the future of gaming as a pro sport. According to The Street, Kotick told those in attendance, "
What we’re doing is creating professional content. So we’re organizing around teams and leagues. You will have the Overwatch League which will have a certain number of teams. Those teams will be a combination of professional sports teams as owners and endemic sports teams as owners."
Whoa! A Vanity Fair panel is certainly not the place you'd expect to hear this announcement made.
While Overwatch does have ranked play, Blizzard has yet to pull the trigger on an official pro league, but that sounds as if that's about to change in the future. The question now is how soon? And just what model will the league use as its base? Will it be a PC based league only or also support console play? Despire the confirmation from Kotick, there are still a ton of questions regarding a potential Overwatch pro league but we'll keep you posted on any and every update as they happen.
