Blizzard is gearing up to celebrate the Lunar New Year, teasing the dates of the Chinese New Year seasonal event in Overwatch. This year's Lunar New Year event will begin January 24, 2019, and run through February 8. It's celebrating the Year of the Pig.
Blizzard was light on the details, only releasing this simple teaser which features Soldier 76. However, you can expect the usual celebratory features, including new skins and other cosmetics, and perhaps the return of a special capture the flag mode. Given that it's the Year of the Pig, something for Roadhog seems appropriate.
Overwatch has celebrated the Lunar New Year for the past two years. There are a total of 185 cosmetic items exclusive to the seasonal event, including 19 character skins. This number will probably be expanded upon with this year's event. Wrecking Ball and Ashe are the only two characters who are new to the roster since last year's event, so maybe they'll be treated to some special cosmetics as well.
We'll have to see if Blizzard expands upon the Capture the Flag/Dog mode; last year's event introduced a competitive version of the mode. While Blizzard has recycled material for the past few major events, the developer did recently host a mini-event themed around Ana. The event, which arrived alongside last week's patch, allows players to undertake a special trial to earn five sprays, a player icon, a victory pose, and an epic Bastet Ana skin, for a total of eight new rewards.
