LAWBREAKERS' Implosion Forced Digital Extremes To Cancel Hero Shooter THE AMAZING ETERNALS
It sounds like the slow implosion of Cliff Bleszinski's LawBreakers killed not only Boss Key Productions, but also a promising team-based online FPS from the creators of Warframe - The Amazing Eternals...
LawBreakers launched for PlayStation 4 and PC in August 2017 on the wings of Overwatch's spectacular success with rather favorable reviews, but the multiplayer shooter failed to find an audience, so it shouldn't be surprising that developer Boss Key Production decided to move on and focus on new projects. Their last attempt on jumping on the popular battle royale bandwagon failed to reach Radical Heights leading to Cliff Bleszinski's studio unfortunate and ultimate closure in May.
Digital Extremes’ Warframe has found success where LawBreakers hasn't – being regularly in Steam’s top five games. But Warframe wasn't the only ambitious project Digital Extremes was working on, as the company’s planned follow-up - a hero shooter called The Amazing Eternals - never made it past the closed beta stage. This funky game didn't enjoy Warframe's popularity as got cancelled in 2017.
"A lot of things were converging at the same time then and what we realized was that it was the right game at the wrong time,” VP of publishing Meridith Braun told PCGamesN. “The competitive landscape at that time was pretty hefty. We just saw LawBreakers not do so great, and it was a fantastic game, so that was sad. That happened right when we were starting our closed beta for Amazing Eternals.”
“We weren't seeing the traction we had hoped for in the closed beta, and weighing that against the success of Plains of Eidolon it just made good business sense to pour those resources back into Warframe.” Thus, The Amazing Eternals was cancelled. “It was a hard decisions but it was the right decision at that time.”
The Canadian developer still plans to launch a new IP that's not connected to the Dark Sector universe, but right now Extremes are focused on supporting Warframe, launching the title on Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Fortuna update which will allow players to explore the open-world of Venus.
