Square Enix revealed their
Avengers project to the world during their E3 2019 presentation. The trailer unfortunately included only miniscule snippets of gameplay, instead focusing on the game's story.
It's said that the game's campaign mode will solely be a single-player experience, its multiplayer aspect being contained within some minor side-missions. Following this news, people wondered exactly what there would be to the game beyond its campaign. Well, Crystal Dynamics has now revealed that the game's narrative will continue to expand post-launch.
Meagan Marie, senior community manager for Crystal Dynamics, recently did an interview (via
Comicbook.com) in which she stated that the game won't only be reinvigorated by the addition of more characters (like Ant-Man and presumably Hawkeye too), but also expansions to its story. It's said that the game's narrative will continue to be expanded for years after the game's release.
Vincent Napoli, lead combat designer on
Marvel's Avengers, followed up Marie's statement with confirmation that the game is, in fact, a live service title. However, it's said that the game has such a narrative focus that there isn't currently anything like it on the market - the closest comparable games being
Destiny or
The Division.
At the moment it's unclear whether the base game will include its own contained story, one that will have a definitive ending and be continued by said expansions, or it's all one massive story - meaning that players would have to stick with Marvel's Avengers for quite some time in order to know how the story ends.
Marvel's Avengers is set to release on May 15th, 2020 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Google Stadia, and PC.
