Filming on the Minecraft live-action movie officially wrapped last week with many of the film's cast and crew gathering together to celebrate. The upcoming movie adaptation features a star-studded cast that includes Jack Black, Kate McKinnon, and Jason Mamoa. But many of the details, including who these actors are playing in the movie remain under wraps.
However, if a new video posted by Jack Black is any indication, we now seemingly know who the actor will be playing in the movie.
The beloved actor posted a video on Instagram that opens with him singing a rendition of the "Double Rainbow" song. He then proceeds to turn the camera and walk into his trailer, which is labeled "Steve."
This could serve as an unofficial confirmation that Black will be playing Steve, one of the franchise's most recognizable lead characters. Steve is one of nine default player character skins and lacks an unofficial backstory as he's intended to be a customizable player avatar.
As Minecraft is an open world sandbox game with very little actual narrative, Steve is basically a blank slate character that players can inject their own personality and story onto. To that end, it should be amazing to see Jack Black's hilarious creativity run wild with the character.
Not much is known about the Minecraft movie at this point. We know it's based on the popular sandbox game released by Mojang Studios in 2011, but that's about it. Rumors on the internet suggest the story of the Minecraft movie could follow a young girl and her group of unlikely adventures as they attempt to save the Overworld from the deadly Ender Dragon.
Several big stars are attached the project, including Jason Mamoa, Kate McKinnon, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, Jennifer Coolidge, and Jemaine Clement. The movie is being directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite), from a screenplay written by Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer, and co-produced by Momoa.
The Minecraft movie currently has a scheduled release date of April 4, 2025.
The 54-year-old actor is no stranger to video game movie adaptations. He recently voiced Bowser in 2023's CG-animated blockbuster The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Despite playing the franchise's iconic villain, Black still managed to make him likable thanks to his comedic chops. His song "Peaches," an ode to Princess Peach, earned a spot on the Billboard Hot 100.
Black is also set to star in the upcoming Borderlands movie. He voices Claptrap, the enthusiastic, talkative, funny, and lovable (sometimes annoying) robot. The Borderlands movie arrives in theaters this August.
