Remember back in April when Warner Bros. revealed at CinemaCon that the sequel to A Minecraft Movie would be titled A Minecraft Sequel? Well, apparently the studio heard your feedback, including the endless memes and internet jokes.
During Minecraft Live 2026 this weekend, Warner Bros. took the time to reveal the new official name for the sequel: A Minecraft Movie Squared.
Alongside the official title, some new details about the movie were shared as well.
Matt Berry, who voiced the "Nitwit" villager in the first movie, made a brief appearance. He confirmed he will again appear in A Minecraft Movie Squared, but did not disclose his role. However, the little skit seemingly suggested he could be playing a variation of Steve — which is perhaps why the film has the title "Squared" in it. It could also be a throwaway joke as Berry was reportedly in line to play Steve before Jack Black took over the lead role.
Elsewhere in the video, stars Jack Black (Steve) and Jason Mamoa (Garrett) confirmed there's "a lot of new in this movie." Fellow co-star Danielle Brooks (Dawns) teased that A Minecraft Movie Squared will take fans "so much deeper into the Minecraft world." This includes new biomes, new characters, and new mobs.
Closing out the video, we got a brief introduction to Kirsten Dunst. A new addition to the cast, Dunst will play Alex, another major playable character from the game.
A Minecraft Movie Squared is scheduled to hit theaters on July 23, 2027. Director Jared Hess is returning to helm the sequel with Chris Galletta co-writing the screenplay.
Not much is known about the actual plot of the movie, though it sounds like we'll be delving deeper into the Overworld. The Minecraft video game doesn't really have a main narrative, as it's more of a sandbox adventure that encourages creativity and exploration.
That said, the first movie follows an unlikely group of misfits — Garrett "The Garbage Man" Garrison (Jason Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers), and Dawn (Danielle Brooks) — who are unexpectedly transported through a mysterious portal into the blocky world of the Overworld. Guided by Steve (Jack Black), a seasoned resident of this strange realm, they must quickly learn its unique rules, mastering mining, crafting, and building to survive dangerous creatures and uncover a way home. As the stakes continue to rise, the group discovers that both the Overworld and their own world may be in danger if they fail.
A Minecraft Movie was a massive success at the box office, despite poor critic reviews. It earned a worldwide total of about $961 million, making it one of the biggest movies of 2025 and one of the highest-grossing video game movies ever. In addition to its box office success, the film became known for its viral trends, including audience reactions to the "Chicken Jockey" gag, where a baby zombie rides a chicken.
It seems Warner Bros. is perfectly fine leaning into the overall silliness of Minecraft and gaming in general, caring less about critic opinions and more about entertaining fans.
