To the surprise of noone, RuneScape Reignited is not happening. Jagex canceled the fresh-start character type on October 15, just 12 days after revealing it on stage at RuneFest 2026. The news came from Mod Ryan in a video and a post on the official RuneScape news page, after nearly two weeks of pushback from existing players who felt the new mode left them behind.
The official RuneScape account shared the video announcing the decision on X. Check it out below:
In the video, Mod Ryan thanked players for their feedback and pointed back to one of the most painful moments in the game's history. "It is super important to us because the last time we didn't listen to player feedback, combat changed forever. And it has taken us over a decade to recover from that. Now I said on stage that we would not repeat the same mistakes of the past, and I truly stand by that," he said. "It is clear that we missed the mark on this, and so we are not moving forward with it."
What Reignited Was Supposed To Be
Jagex revealed Reignited at the end of its RuneFest 2026 summit on October 3 as the big payoff for a year of what it calls the Road to Restoration. Reignited was going to be a new permanent character type with its own economy, its own Grand Exchange, and its own hiscores, with no paid progression. New and returning players would start from the same point, almost as if the game had launched for the first time, with every world-first achievement up for grabs again. Players who pulled one off would have been honored with a permanent statue in a new Hall of Legends.
Here is the original reveal post from RuneFest:
The rules around it are where things went wrong. Reignited characters would have shared worlds with existing characters, which Jagex started calling Veterans, but the two could not trade with each other, use the same Grand Exchange, or share boss instances. Reignited players would also get their own Reignited-only worlds, characters could never be switched from one type to the other, and Reignited needed its own membership, the same way Ironman does.
How The Backlash Played Out
The reaction from the existing community was fast. On October 6, Jagex posted that it was re-evaluating Reignited and opened with an apology, saying it had made existing players feel like they were no longer the focus. The studio listed the main concerns it heard, including that Veteran characters would stop mattering, that Veteran worlds would empty out, that splitting the community would fragment an already small player base, that the restrictions between the two character types did not feel good, and that paying for a second subscription felt wrong.
Mod Ryan followed up on October 9 with a list of possible changes. Jagex was looking at letting players "Reignite" an existing character under their current membership and flip between the Veteran and Reignited versions, giving Veterans exclusive rewards such as a special cosmetic Max Cape, possibly dropping Reignited-only worlds entirely, and loosening the limits on cross-character play after launch. In that same post, he shared that RuneScape currently has hundreds of thousands of members and has been trending on a slight decline for a long time. Less than a week later, Jagex decided to drop the whole idea.
What Is Still Coming On December 2
Most of the December update is still on track. On December 2, Jagex is releasing the Adventure Guide, an optional guide that points players toward the best parts of the game and helps returning players figure out what to do next, along with the first part of the Remastered Journey. That remaster covers the early game from Tutorial Island through Seers Village, Camelot, and Elvarg's lair, and early quests such as Demon Slayer, Vampyre Slayer, and Dragon Slayer are set to get real boss fights with mechanics and health bars.
The free trial is staying too. From December 2 to December 12, new characters and any character that has not had membership since June 2 can play on RuneScape members worlds and access members content for free. Old School RuneScape members worlds are not included. As Mod Ryan put it, "No split worlds, just you, me, and the many players coming in, playing the game we all love together."
Plugins are also launching on Monday, October 19, after a beta that began on October 6 with five community-made plugins, including Quest Helper.
The 2027 Roadmap Stays The Same
Mod Ryan also said the Reignited debate overshadowed what Jagex sees as one of its best roadmap reveals, and that the 2027 plan is unchanged. The year is split into three story Arcs. Hoard of Dragons opens in January with the Dragon Slayer II quest, Grandmaster Clue Scrolls, and a rework of the Agility skill. The City of Gnomes follows in the summer with The Curse of Arposandra grandmaster quest, a Glouphrie the Untrusted boss, and Argento's Nightmare, the game's first community skilling boss. Secrets of Karamja closes the year with a new raid in the Temple of Ah Za Rhoon.
RuneFest was a big show for Jagex beyond Reignited, too. The studio also revealed that it is building a fourth RuneScape MMO that starts in Ashenfall.
Do you think Jagex made the right call by canceling Reignited, or would you have rather seen the studio fix it and launch it anyway?
