MEGA MAN X LEGACY COLLECTION 1 & 2 Fixes The Unusual Maverick Names From MEGA MAN X5

When Mega Man X5 was localised outside of Japan, the game saw an interesting change regarding the names of the Maverick Bosses and the new Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1 & 2 addresses, and fixes this.

Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1 & 2 is a compilation of games that will feature all of the 8 Mega Man X titles in the franchise, as well as adding new things like the X Challenge Mode, new filter options, and an image gallery with concept art, amongst others.

Yesterday we got a new pre-order trailer that showed off the Collection's X Challenge mode—that has X pitting against 2 Maverick Bosses at once. A very interesting detail seen in this trailer was that some of the Maverick Bosses' names had been changed, more specifically the names of Crescent Grizzly(Grizzly Slash), Spiral Pegasus(The Skiver), and Dark Necrobat(Dark Dizzy)—all of which are Maverick Bosses from Mega Man X5.

The interesting thing is that the names featured on the X Challenge Mode trailer, released yesterday, is that those are the real names of the characters in Japan prior to the game's localisation. For some odd reason, whoever was in charge of translating Mega Man X5 thought it was a good idea to change the names of every single one of the Maverick Bosses to those of members from the North American rock band Guns N' Roses. So Grizzly Slash would be based on Slash, Dark Dizzy is based on Dizzy, Duff McWhalen(originally named Tidal Whale) was based on Duff McKagan, and so on.

Now, all the Guns N' Roses names seem to have been corrected and are no longer featured in the game, or at least on the game's X Challenge Mode. Some fans may agree that this is for the best given that they were never on board with the changes in the first place. Mega Man games have a history with name changes, as well as these being somewhat related to music—Mega Man's name being Rock(not to mention Rockman is the real name of the games in Japan), his sister's name is Roll and his brother Protoman's name being Blues, to name but a few— but the blatant changes in Mega Man X5 just weren't everyone's cup of tea as they were too on the nose for a nod.

Mega Man X Legacy Collection contains side-scrolling classics Mega Man X, Mega Man X2, Mega Man X3, and Mega Man X4. Continue the adventure with Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2, which includes Mega Man X5, Mega Man X6, Mega Man X7, and Mega Man X8. Each collection also contains a plethora of rare game art, nostalgic trailers, merchandise galleries, and more. These collections also include the all-new X Challenge mode, which features a series of challenges in which X faces off against two deadly Maverick bosses at once!

Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1 & 2 will be available for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Steam on the 24th of July.
