PlaySide Studios used Gamescom Opening Night Live to give players their first extended look at Game of Thrones: War for Westeros. The real-time strategy game lets players take control of major factions and rewrite the struggle for the Seven Kingdoms. The new trailer ends with an awesome image of the Night King seated on the Iron Throne.
The game is scheduled for an early 2027 release on PC via Steam. PlaySide previously delayed the project from a 2026 window, stating the extra time was needed to reach the quality level the studio is targeting. A playable beta is planned before launch, with more details expected later this year. Check out the new trailer below:
War for Westeros is a classic real-time strategy title focused on large-scale battles across Westeros. Players choose from multiple factions, including House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen, and the Night King’s forces, then build armies, manage resources, and claim territory in real-time skirmishes.
The trailer showcases several recognizable heroes in action. Jon Snow, Jaime Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen, Robb Stark, and Tywin Lannister all appear, alongside direwolves Ghost and Grey Wind. The Night King receives prominent focus and closes the trailer by claiming the Iron Throne, showing the game’s promise that players can alter the outcome of the war.
Armies can field a mix of familiar and spectacular units. In addition to standard soldiers, players will command direwolves, giants, dragons, elephants, and the green wildfire that famously devastated King’s Landing. Each hero brings unique abilities that influence how their faction plays on the battlefield.
One of the core appeals of War for Westeros is the ability to step outside the established story of the television series and novels. Whether leading the Starks to a different fate, pushing the Lannisters to total dominance, or guiding the Army of the Dead to victory, players will decide who ultimately sits the Iron Throne.
PlaySide has emphasized that the game is being built to satisfy both dedicated RTS fans and Game of Thrones audiences. The studio’s most recent update stressed its commitment to delivering a high-quality experience after the delay into 2027.
A playable beta is confirmed for a period before the early 2027 launch, though exact dates have not yet been announced. Further information on the beta window and additional platforms is expected later in 2026, so stay tuned for those.
The Gamescom trailer provides the clearest sense yet of how War for Westeros will translate the politics, armies, and iconic characters of the series into large-scale real-time strategy battles. With the Night King already shown claiming the throne, the invitation to rewrite Westeros’ future is front and center as the game heads toward its 2027 release.
