The long-awaited Star Wars strategy game from Respawn Entertainment and Bit Reactor may finally be revealed in a few months. According to video game enthusiast and Wikipedia gaming editor Timur222 (@bogorad222), there will be an announcement and trailer released during Star Wars Celebration in Japan in April.
Timur222 mainly obtains information via LinkedIn searches; however, Insider-Gaming claims that they were provided with "sufficient evidence" to report that the claims are genuine.
Not much is currently known about the Star Wars strategy game other than it is being helmed by industry veteran Greg Foerstch, the art director for acclaimed strategy games XCOM 2 and XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Bit Reactor, a studio formed back when the announcement was first made in 2022, is leading the development of the title with Respawn producing.
According to the source, it will be released on Xbox and PlayStation platforms as well as Steam and the Epic Store for PC.
“We are huge fans of Star Wars here at Respawn and we’re thrilled to work with Lucasfilm Games on new titles that we have wanted to make for years,” said Vince Zampella, Group GM and Founder of Respawn, at the time of the game's announcement. “If you want to make great Star Wars games, you should come join us on our journey.”
Two other Star Wars games were also announced back in 2021, the sequel to Respawn's Star Wars Jedi franchise and a first-person shooter game led by Peter Hirschmann, Game Director at Respawn. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has since been released in 2023 to critical acclaim and huge success, but the first-person shooter was recently canceled.
Not much was officially revealed about the canceled shooter; however, Insider-Gaming's Tom Henderson recently shared details about the project, which would've put players into the armor of a Mandalorian bounty hunter (not the Mandalorian seen in the Disney+ series, though).
The game, which was said to be "fantastic" by those who had the opportunity to preview it, was a mostly linear level experience but did feature larger open areas to explore and acquire bounties. Combat was described as fast-paced with players able to make use of the Mandalorian jetpack that allowed for vertical design and horizontal boosting. Stormtroopers were the main enemies, but the game also featured "boss-like" enemies.
Despite what sounded like a promising concept, the game's cancelation came as part of EA's company restructuring which resulted in 5% of its workforce getting laid off. EA also started to move away from developing games based on licensed IP.
Star Wars Celebration will take place in Japan from April 18-20, 2025, so be on the lookout for more news regarding the Star Wars RTS game.
