Apex Legends has been incredibly successful for Electronic Arts and Respawn Entertainment. But as the game is now almost two years old, the studio is now looking at ways to expand the franchise beyond just a battle royale game.

Speaking to Eurogamer, game director Chad Grenier said that the short term plan is simply maintaining the current quality of the game. However, long term, Respawn is look at ways they can evolve Apex Legends.

"The other [focus] is: how do we expand it? So that means new players, new platforms, and it also means new ways to play Apex. Right now we're a battle royale game. I think if you look into the future, we have a lot of conversations of, you know, should we expand beyond battle royale? We have this roster of legends that people love - how else can we use them? I think looking into the future, you're probably going to see the game becoming more than just a battle royale game. You see we have all these LTMs (limited time modes) and other ways to play. I think that's a great starting point."

Apex Legends eventually started off development as Titanfall 3 but eventually grew into its own thing as a battle royale game. While there are still no plans for a third installment in the Titanfall series, Grenier hinted at future content in Apex Legends that will make fans of Titanfall happy.

"Looking at future seasons and animated shorts, and things that are coming out next year, I think any Titanfall fan is gonna be super excited," he teased. Respawn is currently working on content up to Season 12 and revealed that they are always exploring ideas for a few seasons out.

As for new modes for Apex Legends, dataminers previously discovered clues hinting towards an arena mode. This perhaps could mean smaller maps with a smaller number of squads. Or maybe they go completely in another direction and bring the Apex Legends universe to other genres, kind of like what Riot Games is currently doing with League of Legends.

Apex Legends is currently on its 7th season, Ascension. The free-to-play game is available on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
