During Summer Game Fest this week, studio Digital Eclipse and toy maker Hasbro revealed a new game that celebrates the rich history of the Power Rangers franchise. Titled, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind, the new retro-inspired game blends the best of the franchise's "brawling blasting, fighting, and driving action."
For any Power Rangers fans who grew up gaming in the early '90s on the NES, Super NES or Sega Genesis, this game has all of the nostalgic elements from the beloved classic game genres. At its core, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind appears to be a sidescrolling brawler beat 'em up as multiple Power Rangers fight alongside each other and taking on some of the franchise's most iconic enemies.
The gameplay is reminiscent of genre classics like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and X-Men. But there also appear to be moments when the gameplay mixes in other classic game mechanics, such as motorcycle driving, first-person rail shooting, and even first-person Zord punching.
Online and offline co-op gameplay that allows up to five simultaneous players has been confirmed. Players will be able to select the Power Range of their choice and even pilot their powerful Zords.
The game is said to feature an original storyline "that both respects and remixes Power Rangers lore with scenarios and gameplay that will be both familiar and new to [Might Morphin Power Rangers] fans."
The game's description reads:
In Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind, the team faces off against a robotic reincarnation of the Power Rangers' long-time nemesis. Robo-Rita has conjured a portal to send herself back in time so she can finally vanquish the Power Rangers by forming an alliance with her younger self. Working together, Robo-Rita and Rita Repulsa rewind, rewrite, and remix the past in an attempt to stop the very formation of the Power Rangers, altering the course of history.
Will the two Ritas and their army of monstrous enemies from across the MMPR timeline finally succeed in destroying the Power Rangers? Or will these teenagers with attitude learn to work together and counter this catastrophic chronological collaboration?
Experience the origins of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers again – for the first time! The past will never be the same…
