After the unexpected implosion of the
Mass Effect series, BioWare is currently busing with the development on
Anthem, the studio's answer to Activision's
Destiny and Ubisoft's Tom Clancy's
The Division. The upcoming online multiplayer action RPG will give you a chance to control Iron Man-like exosuits called Javelins and embark on a journey to discover why gods have abandoned the universe.
According to
Anthem Director Jonathan Warner, the fact that there are no characters for the player to romance in the title and you will create your own story (which usually means that it will be mostly contextual) is very refreshing and invigorating. "
When you talk about a Mass Effect or a Dragon Age, people invariably end up talking about the plots or the points, and it’s very refreshing, when people talk about Anthem, they talk about flying or fighting monsters, or the gear, the Javelins, and it’s been a great opportunity for us to put gameplay first," Warner said in an interview with GamesTM.
Anthem Director also revealed that the game's world will be impressive and the studio is adding some social storytelling elements to it, mostly focusing on companionship. Considering that BioWare's last attempt on creating a shared experience,
Star Wars: The Old Republic (which is also one of the most expensive games in history), failed to live up to players' expectations,
Anthem's future is an unknown.
In this shared-world action-RPG, you and your friends are Freelancers—the bold few with the courage to leave civilization behind, explore a landscape of primeval beauty, and confront the dangers you find. Up to four players band together to take on whatever perils you discover as a heroic team. As your friends support you in your journey, so do your victories and rewards benefit your friends. Wield an arsenal of Javelin exosuits, each equipped with unique weapons and abilities. Customize them with gear you earn and craft, then use them to fly, leap, and climb through a contiguous open world.
Anthem will be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC (via Origin) on February 22, 2019.
