CHRONO TRIGGER To Get Graphics Update On Steam After A Troubled And Controversial Launch

Chrono Trigger was released in February on Steam and people were pretty excited for it...until they realised it was just a port of the mobile game. Today we got news that the game is getting a graphics update.

Chrono Trigger is arguably one of the best RPGs ever made, if not the best, so it was only natural that fans would show a lot of excitement to know that the game was announced for Steam last February. The problem was that the surprise release turned out to be a port of the mobile game, and Square Enix got a lot of flak on social media due to this.

Well, now the Chrono Trigger Steam community have released a statement saying that the game will be getting a graphics update in the next patch for the game. The patches will be releasing later this month and promise to allow players to change between the current "high-resolution" graphics to the classic graphical style the game had on the Super Nintendo.

The statement reads as follows:

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all of your feedback, patience and support so far.

We have been working on addressing the issues that you’ve raised, and will be releasing a number of patches over the coming months as we continue to support CHRONO TRIGGER on Steam.

We’re aiming to release the first of these patches in the first half of April, and the biggest change is that it will include an option to switch between the current high-resolution graphics, and the original graphical style of CHRONO TRIGGER.

We’ll post a full list of changes here when the first patch is released. For now, be assured that we’re working very hard on adjusting, updating and supporting CHRONO TRIGGER on Steam.

As CHRONO TRIGGER is going to receive patches over the coming months, we are going to extend the availability of the Limited Edition until:
5PM, April 30th BST / 9AM, April 30th PDT

Thanks again from all of us on the CHRONO TRIGGER team.

It's always nice to see that developers take these kind of things seriously and are open to recognise that they messed up. Chrono Trigger is considered a masterpiece within the gaming community pretty much since it came out back in 1995 and a port of the phone version isn't doing the game any favours, especially if it meant to lure in new players.

The game has been ported to several consoles over the years, being the Nintendo DS(2008) version the one considered to be the best way to play it, and hopefully now Steam players can also enjoy the game, the way it was meant to, when the patches fix those controversial "high-definition" graphics.

Chrono Trigger is out now on Steam.
