CD Projekt Red Insists CYBERPUNK 2077 Won't Include Microtransactions Despite "In-Game Purchases" ESRB Label

From the studio responsible for developing The Witcher series of video games, Cyberpunk 2077 is a highly anticipated open-world game from CD Projekt Red. Based on the tabletop role-playing game of the same name; the game takes place in a near-future dystopian city, called Night City, in which people have intensely customised their minds and bodies with cybernetics.

Cyberpunk 2077 has been in the works for quite a long time, the first trailer having released all the way back in 2012. Thankfully, though, we're on the verge of the game's release. Though originally intended to release in April, Cyberpunk 2077 was delayed to September 17th back in January — more on that here.

What makes it more evident that the game is on the way is that it has been officially rated by the ESRB. To the surprise of nobody who has been following the highly anticipated title; it has been rated "M" for mature. However, what has raised the eyebrows of mainy is that the ESRB has tagged the game as including "In-Game Purchases."

This is a recent addition by the ESRB, having only began using the label back in April — more on that here. Usually, the label would indicate that a game includes microtransactions and/or loot boxes. However, in this case it has been used to indicate that the game will offer premium expansions.

CD Projekt Red has previously insisted that Cyberpunk 2077 won't include microtransactions or anything of the sort. Now that the ESRB rating is out, they've reiterated this point.

“As we’ve said before, Cyberpunk 2077 is a single-player game with no microtransactions. The ESRB info is based on the fact that expansions require the base game and are therefore treated as a purchase by the rating board.” Fabian Döhl, CD Projekt Red PR Manager, said (via ComicBook.com).

In the most dangerous megacity of the future, the real you is not enough. Become V, a cyber-enhanced mercenary outlaw going after a one-of-a-kind implant — the key to immortality. Customize your cyberware and skillset, and explore a vast city of the future obsessed with power, glamour and body modification. The choices you make will determine the story and shape the world around you.

Cyberpunk 2077 is set to release for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Google Stadia, and PC on September 17th, 2020.
