Thanks to the nearly hour-long gameplay video and comparisons to games like The Witcher, expectations for CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077 are unsurprisingly high, with the RPG elements enticing many gamers.
The previously mentioned gameplay video already provided us with a look at character customization and the game's comprehensive progression system, but now we have a much more detailed account of this multi-layered system.
In a response to a fan's question (shared via Reddit), the developer made it very clear that progression in Cyberpunk 2077 will involve more than just the standard experience points. First, CD Projekt Red explained that players can unlock Perks with both traditional XP and Street Cred, which is earned by completing side quests and jobs. Additionally, Street Cred will give players access to vendors and contacts.
As for character attributes like strength, these can be raised with cyberware enhancements - something viewers observed in the gameplay footage. Finally, performing actions such as "hacking, crafting, short gun, long guns" will raise skill levels.
In all, Cyberpunk 2077 seems to have a deeply layered progression system that will encourage players to engage in various activities across Night City, as things like Street Cred can be earned outside the main story.
