Following the release of the long-awaited
Red Dead Redemption sequel, players made it clear that they were frustrated by the lack of freedom that missions offered. The experience seemed more akin to an on-rails arcade game than a modern open-world game with options aplenty. Straying too far from what a mission demands would result in a game over screen - your screen goes black and you're met with the words "Mission Failed."
CD Projekt Red aims to ditch this obsolete idea with
Cyberpunk 2077. The upcoming, futuristic open-world game looks to be one of the most ambitious ever to grace store shelves. Philipp Weber, a Quest Designer at CDPR, recently told German outlet
Gamestar that, other than upon dying, players will not encounter a game over screen.
Cyberpunk 2077 will allow players the utmost freedom when deciding how they want to tackle an objective.
According to Weber, devs were constantly asking themselves:
"What is the dumbest thing a player can do?" Should a player veer off course from the mission's original plan; the game will simply move on and adapt to the player's decisions. Though the interview is in German,
the game's dedicated subreddit quickly translated it. The Reddit post features an example of this innovative system:
So, it could happen that, instead of, for example, following a target, you decide to eat a Burger and in the Worst-Case-Scenario, in some Quests, the Target actually dies, which will have consequences in the Story.
Cyberpunk 2077 doesn't currently have a set release date.
