Cyberpunk 2077 is not done yet. CD PROJEKT RED has confirmed that a new free update for the game, officially called the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 Update (2.5), is launching tomorrow.

The studio announced the update on the official Cyberpunk 2077 account yesterday with a simple teaser reading "NEW UPDATE INCOMING" and the date of the release. It then followed up with a post on the official Cyberpunk website confirming that the update is free and revealing a few of the features players can expect.

What Is In Update 2.5?

CD PROJEKT RED is keeping most of the details under wraps for now, but it has confirmed two of the headline features. According to the official announcement, Update 2.5 will add cyberware customization and a new dual-wielding playstyle, along with more that the studio has not yet revealed.

Dual-wielding would be a first for V, who has always been limited to one weapon at a time in the base game. It fits the over-the-top style of the Edgerunners anime, where characters regularly tear through Night City with ridiculous amounts of chrome and firepower. Cyberware customization is also a natural fit, since the anime's story is built around just how far its characters are willing to push their bodies.

The studio will be showing off more during a REDstreams broadcast later today (October 21st) at 5 PM CEST, which will be streamed on Twitch, YouTube, and Steam.

Tied To The New Netflix Season

The timing is no coincidence. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, the new season of the anime set in Night City, premiered on Netflix yesterday (October 20th), and the official Edgerunners account confirmed it is now streaming. As we covered over the weekend, the 10-episode season from TRIGGER follows Weak, a washed-up legend once known as King who now has to live without chrome, and D, a Snake Nation nomad and netrunner. It also brings in characters tied to factions straight out of the game, including Maelstrom, Arasaka, and Kang Tao.

The first season of Edgerunners in 2022 gave Cyberpunk 2077 a huge boost, helping bring players back to the game and adding content inspired by the show. Update 2.5 looks set to do the same for the second season, giving fans who finish the anime a reason to jump back into Night City.

CD PROJEKT RED also credited the artists behind the update's official illustration, thanking Taisei Uchida for the original art, Yukiko Kakita for ink and paint check, and Yuichiro Tozawa for special effects.

Six Years Of Updates

It is pretty remarkable that Cyberpunk 2077 is still getting major free updates nearly six years after its rocky December 2020 launch. The game has come a long way since then, with Update 2.0 overhauling its perks, cyberware, and police systems, and the Phantom Liberty expansion adding an entire new district. Update 2.5 continues that support while CD PROJEKT RED works on the next game in the series.

For anyone who has been away for a while, the update is also a good excuse to revisit the game's more recent additions. Patch 2.0's reworked skill trees made builds much more flexible, so new options like dual-wielding and expanded cyberware customization could open up some interesting combinations for players who like to experiment. It also remains to be seen whether Update 2.5 includes any new gigs, items, or appearances inspired by the new Edgerunners cast, similar to the nods the game received after the first season.

More details on exactly what is coming should be revealed during today's REDstreams, so players will not have to wait long before they can try the new features for themselves.

Would you rather use Update 2.5's new dual-wielding playstyle for a fresh run through Night City, or stick with your current build and focus on the new cyberware customization?
