Night City has been busy lately. Between Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 on Netflix and a big themed update for Cyberpunk 2077, the franchise is getting plenty of attention again. Now the man behind the anime has weighed in on whether there will be more.
In an interview with ComicBook, showrunner and writer Bartosz Sztybor said a third season is possible, but only if everything lines up just right at CD Projekt Red.
What Sztybor Said About Season 3
He started by keeping hope alive. "There's a lot of stories to tell in Night City and beyond, so you never know," he said.
Sztybor explained that the studio's whole approach is built around quality first. He said there needs to be "a perfect story and a perfect director, artist, or a studio that will be able to pull off this story."
"So if the stars align and will be able to create something high quality again, then yes," he continued. "But if there's no perfect story or no perfect director with his unique or her unique voice, then maybe it will be just two Edgerunners."
He also confirmed that the second season was never meant to bring David Martinez back from the dead. Instead, it was written as a mirror to the first, with a new crew and the same idea that every choice in Night City carries consequences.
That philosophy fits with how CD Projekt Red has handled the franchise in general. The studio took its time with Phantom Liberty and has kept supporting Cyberpunk 2077 long after launch, so it is not surprising that it would rather wait for the right idea than rush out more anime. Sztybor and Saya Elder were also recently scheduled for a panel at MCM London about the craft behind the show's emotional storytelling, which shows how much care goes into every season.
The Edgerunners Effect On Cyberpunk 2077
For players, the anime has always been good news. The first season helped bring a huge wave of new and returning players to Cyberpunk 2077, and the second season has been paired with Update 2.5, which brought Edgerunners 2 content and dual-wielding to the game. That update added themed gear and a new playstyle built around wielding two pistols or revolvers at once.
Whether or not Edgerunners gets a third season, Night City is not going anywhere. CD Projekt Red is working on the next Cyberpunk game, and the Cyberpunk 2077 movie will tell an original story instead of retelling V's journey.
Read Cyberpunk 2077: Blackout While You Wait
If you want more from Sztybor right now, fans have been recommending Cyberpunk 2077: Blackout, a four-issue comic miniseries he wrote for Dark Horse Comics, with art by Roberto Ricci and colors by Fabiana Mascolo.
It centers on a braindance repairman in Night City who discovers that DMS technology, which lets people live out dreams of fortune, hope and love, has a much darker side. Anyone who has spent time with braindances in the game will feel right at home, since the tech is a big part of V's story.
The best part is that it stands on its own. You do not need to have finished the game or either season of the anime to enjoy it. The complete series is collected in a 104-page trade paperback, which makes it an easy way to spend more time in Night City between play sessions. It is also a good reminder that the writer shaping the anime knows this world inside and out, which should give fans some confidence that any future Edgerunners story would be in good hands.
Would you want a third season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, or would you rather CD Projekt Red focus on the next game?
