In just a few days, we'll return to Night City, where dreams go to die, for a new season of Cyberpunk Edgerunners. Season 2 of the hit anime premieres on Netflix on October 20th, and the streamer has shared the official trailer.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 is shifting away from David and Lucy's story, and will instead introduce an entirely new cast of characters in a standalone story centered on revenge, redemption, and the consequences of life in Night City. While the first season focused on David’s rise and fall as an edgerunner, Season 2 promises a grittier, more grounded, character-driven crime drama that explores themes of family, obsession, and legacy. Based on the trailer, however, fans can still expect the same brutal violence, striking animation, and emotionally charged storytelling that made the original series so memorable.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 pulls you back into Night City, where lives become entangled to the extreme. Weak, a washed-up cyberpunk legend, is now forced to live without chrome as he searches for a sense of purpose in a world that’s passed him by. Meanwhile, the deadly nomad D sets out on a path to revenge that brings him close to corpo secrets never meant to be found. Across this ten-episode standalone series, uncover a story of family, obsession, legacy – and how your lens reflects the stories of the people around you.
The anime is a joint production between CD Projekt Red, the studio behind the Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher video game franchises, and TRIGGER, the acclaimed Japanese animation studio known for Kill la Kill, Little Witch Academia, and Promare. Kai Ikarashi has taken over directing duties from Hiroyuki Imaishi, who helmed the original series. Ikarashi is no stranger to Night City, having directed the critically acclaimed sixth episode of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which chronicled Maine's tragic descent into cyberpsychosis.
The 10-episode season is set to debut on Netflix on October 20th.
If you haven't watched season one yet, I highly suggest you check it out. Even if you're not a huge fan of anime, the storytelling and action is incredible. The first season received a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and an equally impressive 95% audience score.
"Booting up Night City with frenetic action and awe-inspiring visual flair, Edgerunners is an exceptionally stylish anime adaptation of the world Cyberpunk established," the critics consensus reads.
Of course, there's also the video game. While it's not a direct adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077, the anime shares the setting, corporations, technology, and themes, making it an intriguing play for anyone invested in this universe.
