FromSoftware is already working on a new game in Elden Ring: Nightreign, a co-op action RPG that will have three players take to the procedurally generated Limveid and prepare for the final boss over the course of three days. Said bosses can range, with some bosses from other Soulsborne games even making appearances. But, one of the more disappointing features of this game is its focus, that being its multiplayer. It's not disappointing to introduce multiplayer or anything, or even cater a game to favor said companionship, but what does irk some people is that it'll be in teams of three.
A recent IGN interview with game director Junya Ishizaki, though, reaffirms that while the game is tailored for groups of three, or solo if you're feeling sadistic, which if you're playing a FromSoft game, you probably are, FromSoft is still kicking around the idea of introducing a two-player co-op mode in a post-launch update to Nightreign. This would no doubt be a welcome addition. As of right now, players who may just want to play with their friends can only play with one friend and a rando.
In the interview, he apologized for overlooking the possibility some people may want to just play with friends, Meanwhile, they also understood gamers may want to go at it alone, especially within FromSoft games, so that was always something they were going to put effort into.
“The simple answer is that this is simply something that was overlooked during development as just a two-player option, so we’re very sorry about that. As we said before, we set out to make this a multiplayer co-op game for three players, balanced for three players, so that was the main focus and it’s at the core of Nightreign.”
Again, the game itself was balanced around the three-player system, so if they wanted to continue course for the game's release, they'd need to sideline any sort of overhauling feature until after the launch.
“So in putting all our efforts into that aspect, we kind of overlooked and neglected the duos aspect, but this is something that we are looking at and considering for post-launch support as well,”
Ishizaki also assured fans that while the game is built around three players fighting the same bosses, it won't be a walk in the park, which granted, we doubt people expected it would anyway.
Elden Ring: Nightreign heads out to both current-gen and past-gen consoles on May 30.
