The online shooter genre is a crowded field. Playerunknown's
Battlegrounds and Epic's
Fortnite are both similarly huge,
Overwatch is Blizzard's biggest hit since
World of Warcraft,
Destiny 2 became the biggest console launch of the year and let's not forget about EA's offerings, like
Battlefield or
Battlefront. According to Ubisoft's financial results, the company also has a sleeper hit in the portfolio, as the newest
Rainbow Six generates respectable numbers.
Since the game's December 2015 release
R6: Siege has been slowly growing. Despite the smaller than expected numbers, Ubisoft didn't abandon the project and constantly support it with new content, like maps, new operators and free weekends. This strategy is clearly paying off, as 5 million players joined the game in the last quarter, pushing it to the 25 million player mark.
To compare the R6 score, Overwatch gathered 35 millio, the first Destiny 30 million and last year's Battlefield 1 23,5 million players. Ubsioft mastered the "game-as-a-service" approach to the development and looking at these numbers, it's rather obvious that strong supporting back catalog titles is more effective than creating new titles every two years.
The Siege is a brand-new style of gameplay embracing the reality of counter-terrorist operatives across the world: intense and asymmetrical close-quarters combat between attackers and defenders. As a defender, you will have the means to transform your environment into strongholds to prevent the attackers from breaching. As an attacker, you will have many planning options to face this challenge and defuse these situations.
