Digimon is a media franchise that originted in 1997 as a series of virtual pets inspired by
Tamagotchi, which is a handheld digital pet that allowed people to own, well, a digital pet by taking care of their needs since the moment they hatched.
Digimon was also introduced as an anime show and, while comparisons were made at the time, it has little to no connection with
Pokémon—although it did help make
Digimon easier to localise outside of Japan given the latter's popularity around the world.
Digimon has also seen quite a few number of animated movies over the years, with the first official movie being released in October of the year 2000.
When it came to games,
Digimon is a popular franchise with the role-playing
Digimon World series that started on the PlayStation back in 1999—as well as some other genres like strategy, adventure, and even racing that one time.
Today, Bandai Namco has announced that a new
Digimon game is coming for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC Digital in 2019. The new game, titled
Digimon Survive, is a survival simulation role-playing game where players will be able to craft their own story and fight their own way back home after finding thelseves in a mysterious world of monsters.
Digimon Survive comes as a way to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the
Digimon Anime, which is also getting a brand new movie soon.
