Animal Crossing is one of the series that Nintendo fans had been wanting to see in glorious HD since the failed Wii U was released in November of 2012. It wouldn't be until 2020 — yes, a very long 8 years after the Wii U launched — that fans would finally get their wish when Animal Crossing: New Horizons finally became available for the Nintendo Switch.
As it turns out, fans' response to Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been overwhelmingly positive; managing to become the fastest-selling single Nintendo game ever in the United Kingdom, as well as Japan's biggest launch ever for a Nintendo Switch title.
To top it all off, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is now also the biggest launch for the series — as it was revealed that the recently released title sold more copies than every single one of the Animal Crossing games combined. Long story short: the game is a massive hit.
New information has revealed that Animal Crossing: New Horizons broke yet another record in sales, as a study by the NPD Group(via VentureBeat) shows that the game has managed to have a better launch than any of the games in the Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda series, in the United States, since NPD Group started tracking video game sales in 1996.
To put things into perspective, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has had a better launch than The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, both entries in the Super Mario Galaxy series, all three Mtroid Prime titles, and pretty much every single Pokémon game ever released. Just, wow.
