No one could have predicted just how well Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the latest entry in the long-running social simulation series, would sell prior to becoming available. Within days after the game launched, it was revealed to be Japan's biggest Nintendo Switch launch ever.
About a month after the Animal Crossing: New Horizons hit store shelves worldwide, it was estimated that the game had already sold a very impressive 5 million copies. Nintendo then revealed officilal information about the game's sales, revealing that as of the 31st of March Animal Crossing: New Horizons had sold a staggering 11,77 million copies worldwide.
New information recently revealed by Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa reveals that Animal Crossing: New Horizons has exceeded all expectations the developer had for the game, and that 50% of those sales come from digital purchases.
"The initial sales of Animal Crossing: New Horizons have greatly exceeded our expectations. We were targeting the current sales numbers for the game’s lifetime considering fans have been waiting such a long time for this game, but it all happened at a much faster rate than we anticipated," revealed Furukawa during Nintendo's financial results call this week.
Nintendo hasn't revealed how many copies of Animal Crossing: New Horizons have been sold so far, but the sky is pretty much the limit when the game had already managed to sell over 10 million copies in a mere ten days after its worldwide release. At this rate, the latest entry in the Animal Crossing series may become the best-selling title on the Nintendo Switch. Only time will tell.
