One of the announcements that Nintendo made last year, that completely came out of the blue, was that
New Super Mario Bros. U was getting the same
Deluxe treatment that
Mario Kart 8 got back in 2017 for the Nintendo Switch.
From the get-go, we knew that
New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe was going to be including Nabbit and Toadette as playable characters, and that the game would also include the
New Super Luigi U. expansion — which is a far more challenging game that
New Super Mario Bros. U; besides that, everything else looked pretty much the same.
Today, Digital Foundry has posted their new video analysis that focuses on Nintendo's
New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, which is coming out on the 11th of January for the Nintendo Switch, and have noticed that the game isn't just a lazy port.
For starters,
New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe is now running in native 1080p(1920x1080) when docked as opposed to its Wii U counterpart only running in 720p(1280x720). Some pixel crawl, however, can be visible when playing the game on 4K displays.
An interesting change that does absolutely nothing for gameplay or performance, was seen in Peach's geometry — which has been changed in order to make her look more refined. This isn't the case with other character models like Mario or Luigi, however.
When playing in portable mode,
New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe runs at native 720p and — much like in dock mode— the game is locked at a very solid 60 frames per second; which is something that Nintendo usually aims for in their games, especially platformers.
