Handheld game systems are a concept that revolutionized gaming, with the release of the Nintendo Game Boy. At first, there were arcade cabinets, then there were at home game systems, and not long after that, games could fit in the palm of your hand!

Nintendo has always led the charge with the latest and greatest handheld gaming devices, and while there have been valiant attempts to keep up with the media giant, like the PSP and Vita, no one could ever take them off of their throne.

However, every new beginning marks the end of the previous, and now fans are saying goodbye to the Nintendo 3DS as the system is officially being discontinued. Not since the PS2 has such a decision left an impact on fans of the genre, and headlines have been making a note. It has made its mark in gaming history, with Mario Kart 7 being its highest selling title.

The spirit of the 3DS will live on though with the at-home and handheld Nintendo Switch. We would love to hear your memories of the system in the comments below!

As of now, it looks like the Nintendo Switch will be continuing the legacy of handheld gaming for the foreseeable future.
