Cloud gaming is real, and a lot of people think this may be the future of gaming. While this promising service may cater to a certain demographic, there are still a lot of players who prefer to own their own hardware and software.
Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa also sees the advantages of dedicated hardware, as revealed during a recent interview with
Nikkei, stating that cloud gaming could become popular in a few more years — but it is too soon to predict any outcomes.
"
It's possible that cloud gaming could capture the public’s interest in 10 years from now, however at this point in time, I do not think that dedicated hardware will go away. It’s a long way off before we’ll really know the outcome," Furukawa revealed.
"
With that said, it would be pointless to solely focus on methods of play that can only be had on dedicated hardware. Once your audience starts saying they can play on other consoles or smartphones instead, you’re finished."
Truth be told, cloud gaming may sound appealing to some — perhaps, even, more casual — players, but as long as there's still demand for dedicated hardware, big name companies like Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft will still keep giving players the chance to play on a console but they will need to offer players something new to capture their interest.
