It is no secret that the Nintendo Switch is one of Nintend's most successful consoles ever made. It is not the best-selling console just yet, as it still needs to outsell the Game Boy family of consoles, the Nitnendo 3DS, the Wii, and the Nintendo DS; it's on its way, though.
This year, Nintendo has had a rather slow start in terms of software. Animal Crossing: New Horizons released in March and is arguably the Tokyo-based company's biggest launch this year. Just recently, Nintendo has announced Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, which is a prequel to The legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and one of the games that immediately became one of the most highly anticipated titles of the year.
Nintendo is also currently celebrating the 35th anniversary of the Super Mario Bros. series, and a bunch of games have been announced that will be releasing in the coming weeks/months, so it looks like Nintendo is slowly gaining some momentum again.
As it turns out, and despite this being a year in which the company has barely revealed any new games, the Nintendo Switch has set a new record in hardware dollar sales in US history for the month of August; information shared by NPD Group analyst Mat Piscatella.
What's more, Piscatella reveals that the Nintendo Switch was able to best the August dollar sales of the insanely popular Nintendo Wii in 2008. On top of this, hardware dollar sales for the month of August this year have "more than doubled" sales when compared to last year.
As if that wasn't enough, Piscatella also mentions that the Nintendo Switch is August's best-selling hardware platform — which isn't really surprising if we keep in mind that Sony's PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox One are at the very end of their life cycle; with their next-gen counterparts releasing before the end of the year.
