It seems that, for the longest time,
Star Fox has not been able to take off and keep a steady flight. The last good game in the franchise was released a long time ago, depending on who you ask, to the point that
Star Fox has even been rebooted with the immensely disappointing
Star Fox Zero. The reason why this reboot was such a failure is mainly attributed to the developers pushing the Wii U's Gamepad gimmick down the players' throats, thus ruining the experience for the fans.
According to some rumours online, the disappointment won't end with
Star Fox Zero as it has been reported that a new
Star Fox spin-off is in the works. When reading the word spin-off, and
Star Fox in the same sentence, any fan would immediately think of a
Star Wolf game. Well, if the rumours are to be believed, this is not the case at all, and will probably end up being another disappointment.
The report comes from
Eurogamer, via a thread by Reddit user
DasVergeben on Reddit, and it seems to confirm that Retro Studios are working on a racing game, based on Star Fox, under the title of
Star Fox Grand Prix. There are also some pics being shared online that give us a look at the game's logo, as well as some information about the game being a mix between
Diddy Kong Racing, and
F-Zero.
Now, Retro Studios have been able to successfully revive two main Nintendo franchises in the past. These franchises being
Metroid, with the fantastic first-person shooter
Metroid Prime,
Donkey Kong Country with
Donkey Kong Country: Returns, and its vastly superior sequel
Donkey Kong Country: Returns: Tropical Freeze. So Retro Studios may be the right people to bring new life into the
Star Fox franchise that has been dead for a pretty long time.
If Retro Studios are indeed working on a racing game, the real headscratcher here is, why a
Star Fox racing game instead of
F-Zero? Let's just hope that the game ends up being good since
Star Fox Grand Prix, as a concept, is quite interesting...but it may be too much of a tangent from the main series that focuses on on-rail shooting action.
Whatever the case, if Retro Studios are on the case, we can only hope that they will deliver the goods. If the rumours are true, it also means that, sadly, Retro Studios are not working on the next Donkey Kong Country, which really is a shame. Stay tuned for more information about this news.
