Pokémon Sword and
Pokémon Shield released last Friday and, ever since the long-awaited launch, the games have soon established themselves as some of the best-selling titles of the year in Japan, and
Pokémon Sword alone taking the Number #1 spot in the UK charts.
In Japan,
Pokémon Sword and
Pokémon Shield had already managed to make over 1 million in combined sales, and more recent information has revealed the amount of sales that both games have managed to sell worldwide; making it the best launch on the Nintendo Switch thus far.
According to official information from The Pokémon Company, the latest entries in the
Pokémon series have sold over a staggering 6 million copies worldwide, outselling
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate — which had sold an equally impressive 5 million units worldwide.
It is worth mentioning that
Pokémon Sword and
Pokémon Shield — in this very particular case — are considered as one game, so the record would still belong to
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate; at least, in theory. Regardless, this is still a huge win for Game Freak, Nintendo, and fans of the series.
Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield will be set in Galar, an expansive region with many environments—idyllic countryside, contemporary cities, thick forests, and craggy, snow-covered mountains. The people and Pokémon live together in this region, and they’ve worked together to develop the industries here.
Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield are currently available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
